Medicare Plans
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Coverage in Denver, CO
Original Medicare covers most of your hospital and doctor bills, but not every dime. A Medicare Supplement plan, better known as Medigap, picks up the deductibles, coinsurance and copays Medicare leaves on the table, so your yearly spending stays close to fixed.
Medigap plans are standardized by letter, so a Plan G from one carrier pays the exact same benefits as a Plan G from another. What actually differs is price, service, and how each company handles rate hikes down the road.
- See any doctor who accepts Medicare
- A steady premium, few surprise bills
- No referrals, no network to worry about
- Coverage travels with you anywhere in the U.S.

How it works
Medicare pays first, Medigap covers what's left
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) stays your primary coverage. When you visit UCHealth, Rose Medical Center, or any clinic across the Denver metro that takes Medicare, the claim goes to Medicare first. Whatever share Medicare doesn't pay gets forwarded straight to your Medigap carrier, and most members never see a bill beyond the annual Part B deductible.
Since there's no network, you never have to ask if a specialist is "in plan." If they take Medicare, you're covered, whether you're in Denver, Colorado Springs, or visiting grandkids out of state. Medigap skips drug coverage entirely, so most members pair it with a standalone Part D plan.
Compare
Plan G vs. Plan N vs. High-Deductible Plan G
| Plan | Monthly premium | What you pay | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan G | Highest of the three | Just the annual Part B deductible | People who want the fewest bills and the most predictable year |
| Plan N | Moderate | Part B deductible, small office and ER copays, possible excess charges | Healthy members who see doctors occasionally and want a lower bill |
| High-Deductible Plan G | Lowest | Full Plan G benefits once you clear a high annual deductible | Budget-minded members okay with more risk in a rough year |
Rates climb every year, the plan doesn't
Medigap benefits are locked in by law, so a rate increase is the only thing to watch for. We re-shop your Plan G or Plan N every year so you're not overpaying just for staying put.
Medigap skips prescriptions
You'll still need a separate Part D plan. Skip it when you're first eligible and you risk a lifelong late penalty.
Timing
Your open enrollment window is the single biggest factor
For six months starting the month your Part B kicks in, you can buy any Medigap plan sold in Colorado with zero health questions asked. That's the only window where a diagnosis can't raise your rate or get you turned down.
Once that window closes, Colorado carriers can medically underwrite you. Most people still qualify, but conditions like a recent heart procedure, oxygen use or insulin-dependent diabetes can narrow your options. If you're turning 65, start this conversation about three months ahead of time.
- Six-month guaranteed-issue window starts with Part B
- No network, no referrals, no yearly plan shopping required
- Guaranteed renewable as long as you keep paying the premium
- Special guaranteed-issue rights kick in if a plan exits your area
Is it right for you?
Who typically picks Medigap along the Front Range
You see several specialists
Cardiology, oncology or orthopedic visits pile up fast under copay-based plans. Medigap keeps that spending flat. You want budget certainty
A higher known premium beats an unknown out-of-pocket cap for a lot of retirees living on a fixed income. You travel or spend winters elsewhere
Coverage follows you anywhere in the U.S. that takes Medicare, no out-of-area network to stress about.
If a lower monthly bill and built-in dental or fitness perks matter more to you, weigh this against Medicare Advantage in Denver before you decide.
Underwriting
Applying outside a protected window
Inside your six-month Medigap open enrollment window, or whenever a guaranteed-issue right applies, health questions don't come into play. Outside those windows, Colorado carriers can underwrite: they'll ask about diagnoses, procedures, medications and pending tests, and can decline your application or charge you more.
Guaranteed-issue rights show up in specific situations, your Advantage plan leaves the service area, an employer group plan ends, a carrier misled you, or you're inside the 12-month trial right after first joining an Advantage plan at 65. These windows are short and easy to miss, which is why we ask about your health history before starting an application, not after it gets declined.
If underwriting looks like it'll be a problem, we'll tell you up front and look at Medicare Advantage instead of letting you rack up a decline on your record.
Rates
Rate increases, travel, and the yearly re-shop
How Medigap premiums move
Benefits are fixed by law, so price is the only lever left. Colorado carriers typically price by attained age, meaning your premium climbs as you get older, and again whenever the carrier files a general rate hike. Two carriers selling identical Plan G coverage can drift far apart in price over five years.
We re-check your premium every year against the other carriers we sell. Switching usually means passing underwriting, so it's a move to make while you're healthy, not after a diagnosis.
Travel and access
Backed by Original Medicare, Medigap works with any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare. No out-of-area rule, no referral, no network to check before seeing a specialist in Colorado Springs, Houston, or out of state.
Some Medigap plans include limited foreign travel emergency coverage. It's capped and carries a deductible, useful, but not a stand-in for real travel medical insurance on a long trip overseas.
