Medicare Plans

Medicare Part D Drug Plans for Denver Residents

Part D is the piece of Medicare that pays for prescriptions. Private insurers sell it, and the plan with the lowest sticker price is frequently the priciest one once your actual medications enter the picture.

There's really only one way to shop it right: run your exact prescriptions, doses and pharmacy through every plan we offer. That's the same exercise we walk Denver clients through each fall before Open Enrollment closes.

  • Priced around your actual medications, not the sticker premium
  • Your pharmacy choice can swing the cost a lot
  • Drug lists reset every January 1
  • Extra Help can shrink costs if your income is tight

Text or email us your medication list and pharmacy. We run the premium, deductible and expected copays across every Part D plan we carry, then call you with the numbers.

The basics

Three things set your real cost

  • The drug list

Every plan covers a fixed set of medications. Off the list means full retail or a formal exception request.
  • The tier

Covered drugs land somewhere from preferred generic to specialty. The same drug can sit on a cheap tier with one plan and an expensive one with another.
  • The pharmacy

Preferred pharmacies charge less than standard ones. Fill the same script across town and the copay can change.

Shopping

How we actually compare Part D plans

  1. 1

    Write down every prescription

Dose, frequency, all of it. Grab the bottles or a pharmacy printout so nothing gets guessed at.

  2. 2

    Tell us your pharmacy

Where you fill today and whether mail order works for you. Preferred status matters as much as which plan you pick.

  3. 3

    Total the whole year

Premium plus deductible plus every expected copay, added up over twelve months, never judged on premium alone.

  4. 4

    Look again every fall

Drug lists and tiers reset January 1. Last year's smart pick can turn into this year's overpriced one.

Watch out

Penalties, coverage gaps and help paying

Skip creditable drug coverage for 63 days or more after you first qualify for Medicare, and Medicare tacks a late enrollment penalty onto your Part D premium for good. It looks small monthly and adds up fast over a retirement. It's one of the costly slip-ups we see most.

Seniors on a lower income around Denver may qualify for Extra Help, which knocks down or zeroes out Part D premiums and deductibles. The Denver Regional Area Agency on Aging can walk you through the application; check our Denver senior resources page.

Job or VA coverage might already protect you

Creditable coverage through an employer, TRICARE or the VA typically wipes out the penalty risk. Hold onto the yearly creditable-coverage letter your plan sends.

Advantage plans usually bundle Part D already

Have a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage built in? Skip a standalone Part D plan. Adding one can knock you off your Advantage plan entirely.

  • Sign up when first eligible so you never touch the lifelong penalty
  • Standalone Part D pairs with Medigap, not with most Advantage plans
  • Ask about a generic swap before you accept a specialty tier price
  • Recheck your plan every Annual Open Enrollment

Cost stages

Deductible, copays, and the annual spending cap

StageWhat happensWhat to watch
DeductibleSome plans charge a deductible before coverage kicks in; others skip it on lower tiers.A $0 deductible doesn't mean cheap overall. Check what the tier copays cost behind it.
Initial coverageYou pay a copay or coinsurance per fill and the plan covers the rest.Tier placement drives this number. One plan's tier 2 can be another plan's tier 4 for the same drug.
Catastrophic / yearly capOnce your out-of-pocket drug spending hits the annual limit, covered drugs cost nothing for the remainder of the year. This cap matters most if you're on a specialty or brand-only medication.

Ask about the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan

Medicare lets you split your yearly out-of-pocket drug costs into monthly installments instead of a big hit at the counter in January. It doesn't lower the total, it just spreads it out. Worth asking about if an early-year refill has ever stung. You enroll through your drug plan and we'll walk you through the steps.

Every fall

Your yearly medication check-up

Between October 15 and December 7, every Part D plan can shift its premium, deductible, drug list, tier placement and preferred pharmacy network. Your own prescriptions shift too. The plan that was cheapest for you last January can quietly turn into one of the costliest.

Each fall we rerun your current medication list against every plan we offer and tell you straight whether staying put or switching saves more over the full year. If staying is the right call, that's what we'll say. See Annual Open Enrollment for the exact dates.

Common questions

Part D questions Denver clients ask us

Why isn't the cheapest premium the cheapest plan for me?
Because premium is a small slice of the real story. Deductible, tier placement and pharmacy status usually outweigh a few dollars of monthly premium.
What if my medication isn't covered?
You can ask for a formulary exception with your doctor's backing, switch to a covered alternative, or wait for the next enrollment window to pick a different plan.
What does step therapy mean?
The plan makes you try a cheaper drug first before it covers the one your doctor actually prescribed. Ask about this up front if you're on a brand name.
Is mail order always the better deal?
Often for 90-day maintenance drugs, but not always. We check your local pharmacy against mail order rather than guessing.
Can I pair Part D with a Medigap plan?
Yes, that's the usual combination. See Medigap.
